The City of Alexandria operates under an Independent Government, which derives its governing authority from a charter granted by the Virginia General Assembly. Changes in the structure and powers of the City government are made by amending the Charter. The Alexandria City Council is composed of a Mayor and six Council members who are elected at-large. The Mayor, who is chosen on a separate ballot, presides over meetings of the Council and serves as the ceremonial head of government.
The City of Alexandria seeks a visionary and accomplished fire services professional, who is an outstanding leader and administrator, to serve as its next Fire and EMS Chief. The ideal candidate must have an unblemished record of ethical and professional conduct that can withstand intense public scrutiny. They should have a clear and concise communication style, excellent listening skills, and demonstrate personal command and calm under pressure.
The position requires a bachelor’s degree in fire science, emergency management, public or business administration, or a related field. A master’s degree in public administration, public policy, or a related field is preferred. A minimum of ten years’ experience in career Fire-EMS service, including five years of supervisory experience and two years in an executive management/administration level, is required.
The preferred candidate will have successful experience as a Fire Chief or an Assistant/Deputy Chief command staff level position in a fire department environment similar to the City of Alexandria with a highly engaged community and high service demands. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of fire and emergency medical services operations and management; public administration of local governments; knowledge of best practices in the management of municipal fire and emergency medical services; and the principles and practices of emergency preparedness and disaster response. Experience with collective bargaining will be favorably considered. Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, will also be considered.
Required certifications include:
- Certified Firefighter II
- Fire Officer II
- Fire Instructor II
Preferred certifications include:
- Candidates that have previous certification and experience as an advanced life support provider (paramedic) will be looked upon favorably
- Chief Fire Officer (CFO) designation
- Executive Fire Officer (EFO) designation
- Certified Emergency Manager (CEM)
The City of Alexandria offers a salary range of $127,634-$228,571, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
